Marcelo S. Alencar was born in Serrita, Brazil in 1957. He received his Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering, from Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), Brazil, 1980, his Master Degree in Electrical Engineering, from Universidade Federal da Paraiba (UFPB), Brazil, 1988 and his Ph.D. from University of Waterloo, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Canada, 1994. Marcelo S. Alencar has more than 35 years of engineering experience, and 31 years as an IEEE Member, currently as Senior Member. For 18 years he worked for the Department of Electrical Engineering, Federal University of Paraiba, where he was Full Professor and supervised several graduate and several undergraduate students. From 2003 to 2017, he was Chair Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Federal University of Campina Grande, Brazil.
Previously, he worked, between 1982 and 1984, for the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC). He spent some time working for MCI-Embratel and University of Toronto. He was Visiting Professor at the Federal University of Bahia and Senai Cimatec, Salvador.
He is now with the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, Natal, Brazil. Marcelo Alencar published 30 books, 12 book chapters and more than 500 papers in journals and conferences. Peer review (more than 30 for publications and grants).
He is a Registered Professional Engineer, founder and President of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Communications (Iecom), Vice-President External Relations of the Brazilian Telecommunications Society (SBrT) and a columnist for the traditional Brazilian newspaper Jornal do Commercio.
